Graduate Student Paper Competition

Details

The CSCE 2012 Local Organizing Committee and the Student Affairs Committee of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) invite engineering graduate students to take part in the CSCE 2012 Annual Conference.  The graduate student competition offers an opportunity for students to present their research activities.

Papers that have already been accepted for publication in the conference proceedings where the graduate student is the primary author and podium presenter are automatically entered into the graduate student competition.  For any additional information please contact Dr. Samer Adeeb at adeeb@ualberta.ca.

Evaluation Criteria: 

The competition will be judged based on an evaluation of the written submission (50%) and the oral presentation (50%).

The written submission will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Overall quality, originality and effort in the research work
  • Clear introduction to the topic/research
  • Literary quality of the paper
  • The objectives of the project
  • Research methodology
  • Technical value of the research
  • Creativity and innovation, key contributions
  • Conclusions and Recommendations

The presentation will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Overall quality of presentation
  • Clarity of introduction to the topic and presentation of research objectives
  • Clarity of presentation of the research work, methodologies, ideas, innovations, contributions
  • Discussion of research findings
  • Conclusions and Recommendations
  • Adherence to time restrictions of presentation

 

Rules and Regulations

  • Only one paper per student is allowed in the student competition.
  • Each student author should deliver the oral presentation on their paper.
  • All student presenters will have to register for the CSCE 2012 Annual Conference. Neither CSCE nor the CSCE 2012 Annual Conference Local Organizing Committee is able to provide funds for travel or towards the conference registration fee.
  • The graduate student presenting the paper should be the first author in the submission.
  • Applicants must be a student member of CSCE and must be registered as a graduate student in a university (Annual CSCE student membership is only $10.00 plus tax.)
  • By participating in the contest, all participants authorize the contest organizers and CSCE to use their names and/or photograph and/or likeness and/or voice, if required, for communication and promotional, non-profit, purposes, without remuneration. CSCE reserves the right to publish submissions submitted to the contest that it believes relevant on its Internet site.

 

Prizes

Honorary prizes:  The first, second and third graduate student papers in each speciality conference and in the general conference will be awarded honorary certificates recognizing their achievement.

Cash prizes:  The top graduate student paper in each speciality conference will be awarded a cash prize of $300

Publication:  The top graduate student paper will be published in the Canadian Civil Engineer and on the CSCE web site. Papers in the graduate student competition will be published as a regular paper in the conference proceedings.

 

Undergraduate Student Paper Competition

Details

The CSCE 2012 Local Organizing Committee and the Student Affairs Committee of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) invite engineering undergraduate students to take part in the CSCE 2012 Annual Conference.  The undergraduate student competition offers an opportunity for undergraduate students to present design projects (or undergraduate research projects) carried out during the course of their undergraduate studies.

The undergraduate competition will take the form of a project report and a presentation in a designated undergraduate students session.  Entries in the undergraduate competition will be by individual students or groups of students involved in a single project.

To take part in the undergraduate competition, students are required to contact to Dr. Samer Adeeb at adeeb@ualberta.ca with their information. Undergraduate students will need to submit a final paper in extended abstract form by the final paper submission deadline.
